New Release - Medicine

The bad news is I can't really buy Christmas presents this year because I spent all my money building the brand new Loud As Folk recording studio. The good news is: lots of great music will be coming in 2017. In the spirit of seasonal giving, head over to the music page for a free download of Medicine, the first track I recorded in the new studio.

In the Loud As Folk tradition, I had some help from my friends. My Six Mile Station bandmate John Underwood jumped in on the banjo and punk rock legend Chris Fox can be found shredding the lead guitar.

I hope your holiday spirits are as high as I am. Look out for lots of releases next year and if you are around Reno for NYE join me at Third Street Bar where I'll be opening for Hellbound Glory.

New Release - Black River

I was invited to participate in a collaborative art show called Perspectives based on the poetry of Ryan Goldhammer. I thought it would be a great excuse to push myself in a different direction so I locked myself in the studio for a few days and got to work. The end result is a lot different than anything I have released and something I'm very proud of. The lyrics for the first verse and chorus were taken directly from the poem, the second verse and bridge were lyrics I added. This is a completely self produced release, I did the engineering, mixing, and mastering myself. I also sang, played rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass, and organ. My Six Mile Station band mate Jeffrey Knight joined me to lay down some great, driving percussion parts as well. To hear the song, see the album art Ryan Goldhammer created, and read my artist statement head to the Music Page.

If you would like to see the rest of the art created for the show visit Hub Coffee Roasters at 727 Riverside Dr, Reno, NV 89503 between March 3rd and 26th.

Reno Music Beat: Spike’s open mic a musical feast

Mike Sion -  March 2, 2016

As the son of a circus veteran who produced bills around the world, Reno native Spike McGuire was born into show biz. It’s in his nature to perform — as he does as singer-songwriter-guitarist with Reno-based Americana quintet Six Mile Station — and to promote — which he does with the Loud as Folk songwriter showcase he created, and as host of the popular Open Spike Night open-mic.

Official Video - NPR Tiny Desk Contest

Over the weekend I sat down with my guitar and a few cases of my favorite beer to make a submission for NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. I'm really happy with the finished product. I chose my song John Law because unfortunately it seems more and more relevant every time I turn on the news. It felt like a good fit since NPR is where I get most of my news anyway. I would like to say that this song is not anti-police, this song is anti-police brutality (which is an important distinction to make). If you listen to the lyrics that should be pretty clear. Not everyone takes the time to listen though, and I suppose that is the root of the problem I am singing about in the first place.

Interview - InFrequency

I got to catch up with Fil Corbitt on the InFrequency podcast to talk about the Reno music scene and the songwriters showcase I put together - Loud As Folk. Fil gives a hell of an interview and I wouldn't be too surprised if he gets his own show on NPR before too long. You can give it a listen HERE

T-Shirt - Beardevil

Have you been lusting after the rad shirt I’m wearing in the Future Jesus music video? Well lust no more... Head over to the store and pick one up today! While you are there grab a matching coozie and bottle opener.

New Release - Gas Money

After constant touring with Six Mile Station over the last couple of years and putting out our album Aoudiobiography last month, I realized I was about to set out on a cross country solo tour without a proper solo record. I called up Richard Spagnola at Dogwater Studios and told him my situation and that it was going to take 1 day, 2 microphones, and him to fix it. I'm really happy with how it turned out. You can check out a few tracks on the Music page.

This is limited release of 50 hand made copies on CD that will only be available to my live shows and once they're gone, they're gone. You can stream 3 of the 10 tracks on this website.

Official Video - Future Jesus

Vaude Villan Entertainment produced this video and if it’s half as fun to watch as it was to make, you’re gonna enjoy it. The hardest part of having a bunch of creative friends is that everyone is usually immersed too deeply in artistic projects to find free time to hang out. I think making this video taught me a loophole. Just get a bunch of your creative friends together for a day on an artistic project. Everyone in this video was such a pro and such a joy to be around. We started the shoot a half an hour behind schedule and ended a half an hour a head of schedule. I’m pretty sure that’s a show business first. Head to the Videos page to check it out.

Graph Tech Endorsement

With the new year I am honored and excited to announce a new relationship - I am now officially endorsed by Graph Tech Guitar Labs. Graph Tech has created some of the worlds most recognized products and brands in the music industry. I had my guitars outfitted with with Black Tusq XL nuts and saddles as well as Tusq bridge pins. Tusq is a man made material precision engineered under high pressure and heat, specifically to govern which frequencies are transferred to the guitar top (tone) and which ones remain in the strings (sustain). Tusq is more harmonically respondent than bone or ivory and isn't subject to the inconsistent soft or dead spots caused by the natural grain of organic materials. Plus there isn't a particularly "green" way to get ivory... I have long referred to my touring guitars as "the war elephants" so I get a kick out the fact that they got a "Tusq" upgrade. Graph Tech makes great picks and tons of other cool stuff too. Check out their website here.
